7:00AM Jessica reached Pr. Schemechel the evening before; he and his lawyer can attend a Friday meeting.
7:30AM Fernando arrived on time. We had breakfast and caught up on “stuff”. We called Jessica and told her we are going to drive out and look at the kitchen and suggested we all get together at 10:30. Roxana said that was a good idea.
8:30AM Drove to the school. The dirt road really is amazingly bad. Even in a high center 4X4 the road is hard to navigate. During the drive, Fernando called Lawyer Ochoa and Alcalde (Mayor) Vasquez. Both can attend the Friday meeting.
Refer to pictures of the school. The kitchen is a 20x15 foot concrete block building with a widow in one side and a door. The window and door are of sheet metal. The roof rafters are metal. The school provided roof tiles the community had salvaged from some other building. Fernando decided that the tiles were so old and brittle that they would be hard to work with and would not be satisfactory so he ordered synthetic corrugated panels. Inside, a reinforced concrete table with two fire pits (one on each end) was constructed. In case you are wondering, smoke goes out at the gap between block wall and corrugated roof. Fernando hasn’t finalized the numbers but the thinks the total cost will be less than $2,000. We committed up to $1,200 on an estimate of $2,400 for a smaller building. We have a larger building, under budget because of Fernando’s vigilance. He is proud of the kitchen and he has a right to be.
10:30AM At the motel, Roxana and Jessica arrived on time. I suggested that we talk about L4L management then go to San Lorenzo for lunch. I slowly worked through the management changes, being careful to emphasize Roxana’s fulltime teaching responsibilities and Fernando’s strong management background. I was methodical, thorough, and, hopefully, sensitive to the situation. At the end, I asked for questions. Roxana said, to Fernando, “I had my turn for comments last evening, now we want to hear from yours.” On the way to the restaurant in San Lorenz, Roxana said that the bank is also in San Lorenz so we might as well get Fernando’s signature on the checking account. At the bank from 11:30 to almost 1:00; absolutely amazing. Went to lunch. Back at the motel by 3:30.
3:30PM End of day.
